South Hardin clinches NICL West volleyball title

ELDORA – Sharing the NICL West volleyball title last year was a great first step for an improved South Hardin volleyball team.

But with so many returning this fall, the Tigers wanted this year to be a step forward.

It’s been more like a leap.

South Hardin’s undefeated season marched on with a straight-set sweep of AGWSR at South Hardin High School on Thursday, completing a perfect run through the NICL West round robin.

The Tigers, ranked fourth in Class 2A, won 25-18, 25-20, 25-14 to improve to 18-0 on the season. AGWSR fell to 7-10.

Warriors shut out Cougars

FAIRBANK – Wapsie Valley kept AGWSR football out of the end zone in a 42-0 Warriors victory at Wapsie Valley High School on Friday night.

AGWSR (2-2) hosts Grundy Center (3-1) on Friday.

Wapsie Valley (2-2) outgained the Cougars 441-123 in total offensive yards and forced three AGWSR turnovers.

Cale Culver ran the ball 13 times for 39 yards; Bo Gerbracht was 3-of-13 passing for 51 yards and three interceptions.

Culver made six total tackles, including two for a loss. Bradly Roder also had six total tackles.

Bearcats bash Comets

CONRAD – North Butler spoiled BCLUW football’s homecoming game in a 41-7 win for the unbeaten Bearcats at BCLUW High School on Friday.

The Comets (0-4) were held to 68 yards of total offense and trailed 35-0 at halftime. BCLUW heads to Nashua-Plainfield (1-3) for Week 5 on Friday.

Nick Feldpausch had 10 carries for 61 yards and a seven-yard touchdown score to lead the Comet offense.

Cougars 2nd at G-R tourney

REINBECK – An upset victory over ranked Gladbrook-Reinbeck was the highlight of AGWSR volleyball’s run to the championship game of G-R’s tournament on Saturday, finishing as runners-up to Aplington-Parkersburg.

AGWSR defeated the 1A No. 8 Rebels in the semifinals, 21-16, 21-19. In the finals, A-P won 21-15, 21-19. AGWSR also beat GMG, East Buchanan and Waterloo Christian; the Cougars are now 7-8 overall.

Cougars battle with Spartans, Falcons

The AGWSR volleyball team fought, but eventually fell to Grundy Center and Aplington-Parkersburg in volleyball action last week.

In last Tuesday’s road game in Grundy Center, the 12th-ranked Spartans won 23-25, 25-18, 25-18, 26-24. Thursday’s home game went to the Falcons, 25-22, 25-16, 20-25, 28-30, 15-8.

Brynn Smith had 27 kills and 10 digs against the Spartans; Trevyn Smith added eight kills, 16 digs and 32 assists.

Tigers, Comets run at South Tama

TAMA – BCLUW and South Hardin were among the participants at the South Tama Invitational on Monday, Sept. 13 at South Tama County High School.

The South Hardin girls were eighth in the team standings with a 188 team score. Jaiden Roy led the Tigers finishing 23rd for team-scoring purposes in 24:57. Elizabeth Stanish was 35th in 26:29, Elizabeth Daleske 36th in 26:47, Lydia Mueller 39th in 27:08 and McKenzie Runyon placed 55th in 33:02.

BCLUW did not field a full team, freshman Abby Kemp led the Comets in 25th overall in 24:34.

Tigers cut off Comets in four

ELDORA – After some early struggles with a tough BCLUW team, South Hardin volleyball dispatched the Comets in four sets in an NICL West matchup at South Hardin High School on Tuesday.

The Tigers won 25-21, 15-25, 25-13, 25-16 to remain undefeated at 16-0 and improve to 3-0 in the West.

Ellie Anderson had 10 kills and 10 digs for the home team; Ava Salvo added nine kills, five blocks and nine digs; Ava Paige added eight kills.

Hole in one

“It was totally unexpected!” That’s what Eldora resident Jim Brown said about his hole in one shot on a 160-yard par 3. Brown racked up this achievement on a recent trip to Scotland where the prize for his feat included buying a bottle of whiskey for the other golfers, and having his name engraved on a plaque.

Brown said there was a 15 mph wind and the ball went in on one bounce. “I saw it take the bounce, but I didn’t see it go in,” he said, noting that his teammates were the witnesses. “It was a yellow ball that looked a lot like a soccer ball – yellow and black.”

Tiger comeback stuns Spartans

GRUNDY CENTER – Drue Luiken and the South Hardin seniors couldn’t let Tuesday’s opportunity pass them by.

“Just before this game, we were saying how this was our last time playing in Grundy Center,” Luiken said. “There’s no more, and that’s like with everything, we are just taking everything in, soaking it all in.”

For the first two sets of Tuesday’s NICL West matchup, it seemed the moment had gotten too big for the sixth-ranked Tigers.

Cadets squeak past Tigers

IOWA FALLS – Iowa Falls-Alden edged out South Hardin football 17-14 in a turnover-laden affair at Cadet Field on Friday.

The Tigers (1-2) host Dike-New Hartford on Friday. The Cadets improved to 1-2 overall after losing each of their first two games by three points.

Each team lost three turnovers on Friday, including a Sean May recovery of a Cadet fumble in the end zone that gave South Hardin a 14-10 lead with 12 seconds left in the third quarter.
