BCLUW hangs on in 5-set victory

CONRAD – Abby Stephenson implored BCLUW volleyball to get locked back in.

AGWSR had battled back to force a fifth set with the Comets and BCLUW’s first-year head coach didn’t want the team to let victory slip through their fingers.

“We had to go back to the little things,” Stephenson said. “When things start going wrong, it’s just about going back to the fundamentals and making sure we have that tenacity to keep the ball from hitting the floor.”

Teske signs with Northwestern

ELDORA – Jaidyn Teske had to decide how her college experience would be defined.

Once the South Hardin senior visited Northwestern College, it seemed like the decision was made for her.

“I realized how much of an environment it was that I actually wanted to be a part of,” Teske said. “It was very God-filled and I loved that.”

She can also pursue another one of her passions, signing on Friday at South Hardin High School to join the Red Raiders’ women’s volleyball program in Orange City.

Tigers have high hopes for state return

John Teske doesn’t know if South Hardin volleyball has enough established history to expect to make it back to the state tournament.

“It’s not so much expectations, just big hopes,” said Teske, the Tigers’ co-head coach along with Suzy Teske.

The Tigers return six of the eight players that took the floor at the Alliant Energy PowerHouse last November, and with a couple talented freshmen slotting in as needed, another small but mighty group takes aim at trying to be one of the eight teams making the trip to Cedar Rapids.

Last week: South Hardin lost to Grundy Center, 35-7. South Hamilton defeated Roland-Story, 48-20.

Tigers struggle with Spartans in opener

GRUNDY CENTER – Nick Eller doesn’t assign any moral victories to Friday’s season-opening loss to Grundy Center.

But considering the caliber of opponent for Week 1, the South Hardin head coach thinks this can only help the Tigers reach their long-term goals.

The Spartans throttled South Hardin’s run game and made big offensive plays in the 35-7 win at Spartan Stadium on a muggy Friday night.

Tigers start season 6-0

HUMBOLDT - South Hardin volleyball started the 2021 season with wins in all six of the Tigers’ matches at a Humboldt tournament on Saturday.

The Tigers, ranked sixth in Class 2A to start the season, defeated seventh-ranked Carroll Kuemper in three sets in the marquee matchup of the day, with set scores of 25-19, 21-25, 15-11.

Ellie Anderson landed 12 kills to lead the South Hardin attack, with Rylee Nelson adding seven kills. Emma Salvo distributed 29 assists to her teammates. Jaidyn Teske paced the defensive effort with 28 digs and Macy Engelson contributed 11 digs.

Cougars split at Grundy triangular

GRUNDY CENTER – AGWSR volleyball’s 2021 debut was a rousing success.

Even though Grundy Center ultimately spoiled the Cougars’ strong start, AGWSR head coach Jill Smith saw plenty that the girls should like in splitting with the Spartans and Hudson in a season-opening triangular at Grundy Center High School on Tuesday, Aug. 24.

The Cougars defeated Hudson, 25-21, 25-21; the Class 2A No. 10 Spartans claimed a 25-22, 25-21 sweep in the final match of the night. Grundy Center ended the night 2-0 with a sweep of Hudson, 25-8, 25-17.

Shot clock coming to Iowa HS hoops in 2022-23

A shot clock is on the way for Iowa high school basketball.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association and Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union have each approved the use of a 35-second shot clock for varsity competition, beginning in the 2022-23 season.

The IGHSAU approved the move last month, while the IHSAA voted to proceed last week. Both are acting on a rule recently established by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), which permitted state associations to establish the shot clock.

South Hardin

The Tigers topped the NICL West standings with a 9-1 record, outscoring their oppo-nents 79-6 as division champions. Their only loss came in a 1-0 decision at Grundy Center on June 18 –the Tigers won their final three West games to finish two games ahead of the Spartans in the standings.
