Tigers kick aces, sweep Ogden

ELDORA – South Hardin volleyball had a dominant performance at the service line in Wednesday’s regional-opening sweep of Ogden at South Hardin High School.

The Tigers won 25-9, 25-6, 25-11 and advanced to Monday’s Class 2A Region 3 semifinal in Eldora against Woodward-Granger (11-20).

South Hardin (34-5) recorded 19 aces in the victory, led by senior Emma Salvo’s 10 aces on 19-of-21 serving. Macy Engelson and Rylee Nelson each had three aces, followed by a pair for Ava Salvo and one more for good measure from Jaidyn Teske.

Tigers to tussle with Trailblazers in first round

The South Hardin football team will make the long journey to Dyersville for a first-round playoff meeting with the Beckman Catholic Trailblazers on Friday.

Beckman is undefeated at 8-0 and was rated eighth in the most recent Class 1A Radio Iowa poll. The Trailblazers’ marquee victory was a 35-34 overtime victory over Waterloo Columbus on Oct. 1 which helped push Beckman to the Class 1A District 4 championship.

Cyclone offense overwhelms Tigers

ELDORA – South Hardin football played Denver close through the first quarter of Friday’s regular-season finale at Tiger Field.

But the Cyclone offense kicked into gear in the final three quarters with 34 unanswered points, dealing the Tigers a 47-7 defeat to wrap up Class 1A District 3 play.

South Hardin moves on to the postseason as the fourth-place team out of District 3, drawing a road match with undefeated Dyersville Beckman on Friday.

Denver’s offense spun up 399 yards of total offense and the Cyclone defense forced four South Hardin turnovers.

Miller, Harding lead Cadet girls at NCC meet

GOLDFIELD – Teah Miller and Abby Harding were second and third to lead the Iowa Falls-Alden/AGWSR girls cross country team at the North Central Conference Meet at Oakridge Golf Course in Goldfield.

Miller finished in 19:55 for silver and Harding earned bronze in 19:58.

The Cadet girls were fourth with 92 points. Kyla Oppold (27th, 23:44), Elizabeth Kielty (29th, 24:00) and Annika Nelson (31st, 24:20) rounded out the five Cadet scorers.

The IF-A/AGWSR boys finished sixth with 141 points. Jase Beaubien paced the team in 11th in 18:12.

Comets fall to A-P

CONRAD – Aplington-Parkersburg defeated BCLUW in straight sets at BCLUW High School on Thursday in the Comets’ final game of the regular season.

The Falcons won 25-20, 25-18, 25-12.

Allison Engle had eight kills and eight assists for the Comets; Eden Wilson added six kills and a team-leading 14 digs; Sydney Anderson contributed 10 assists and 10 digs.

BCLUW finished the season at 20-16 overall and hosted Collins-Maxwell on Monday in an opening-round regional game.

Wapsie blanks BCLUW

FAIRBANK – Wapsie Valley shut out BCLUW, 47-0, in the Comets’ district football finale in Fairbank on Friday.

BCLUW fell to 0-8 overall. While the Comets missed out on making the playoffs this season, they will play one more home game on Friday against Colfax-Mingo. The Iowa High School Athletic Association, in recognition of the shorter regular season in the smaller classifications beginning this season, allowed non-qualifying schools to schedule each other for a ninth game.

Wapsie Valley led 35-0 at halftime. BCLUW statistics were not available at press time.

NICL foes halt Cougars’ run

Sumner-Fredericksburg and Aplington-Parkersburg stopped AGWSR’s nine-match winning streak in a NICL crossover triangular at A-P High School on Tuesday.

Sumner-Fredericksburg, rated sixth in 2A, beat AGWSR 25-19, 25-15; the Falcons downed the Cougars 25-23, 25-18.

Earlier in the week, the Cougars made short work of a match at Colo-NESCO with a 25-14, 25-14, 25-13 win.

Cougars end season with victory

ACKLEY – AGWSR football sent the home crowd happy with a 30-10 victory over West Fork in the Cougars’ final regular-season game.

The Cougar defense forced four turnovers against the winless Warhawks, including a 28-yard scoop-and-score for Aiden Heitland on the fumble recovery. West Fork’s offense was swarmed all night in the backfield as AGWSR finished with 11 ½ total tackles for loss, led by Ryley Bohner and Jared Granzow recording 2 ½ yard-losing stops each. Bohner and Granzow were also the team’s top tacklers at 7 ½ and seven total tackles, respectively.

Tigers 4th in NICL tourney

South Hardin battled against some of the best volleyball teams in the state as part of Thursday’s final round of the first-ever North Iowa Cedar League volleyball tournament at Dike-New Hartford High School.

The Class 2A No. 3 Tigers went 0-2 on the day to finish fourth, but saw the kind of tough competition that could be waiting for them in regional play and potentially beyond.
