Maharry receives INA recognition

GRUNDY CENTER - The Iowa Newspaper Association recently recognized Grundy Register Editor and Publisher Robert Maharry, one of three journalists statewide with the Jay P. Wagner Prize for Young Journalists. The prestigious distinction honors the memory of Jay P. Wagner, a lifelong Iowa newspaper reporter and editor whose passions included encouraging young reporters and promoting great community journalism.

Sups OK hospital bonds

ELDORA – The Hardin County Supervisors approved a resolution, which authorized a loan agreement and provided a loan for $13,920,000 to refinance bonds used by Hansen Family Hospital in Iowa Falls. These refinanced bonds were initially used for construction purposes for the hospital.

UMB Bank of West Des Moines was also approved as the paying agent, note registrar and transfer agent.

Hubbard group hopes for new pool by 2023

HUBBARD - In the heart of Hubbard lies a swimming pool that has seen a lot in its lifetime. For 60 years, it has kept the community splashing in summer fun. It has seen kids grow up making memories, and years later return, bringing kids of their own. Now the space will lie empty for the second year in a row. Last year it did not open due to COVID-19. This year, however, it was determined by the city that it is done for good, due to the wear and tear of age. But thanks to a group of community members, this is not the end.

Raezy Paiges closing doors

IOWA FALLS – Lorri McConnell Brouer named her store Raezy Paiges after her niece Jamie Rae, and her daughter, Lindsey Paige. On April 30, Brouer is closing up shop and retiring after 15 ½ years of being in business at the 613 Washington Ave. location.

“I’ve been thinking about this since January,” Brouer said. “And I’m not a ‘victim’ of COVID. That couldn’t be further from the truth. I just decided to retire.”

MOPS group forming, Easter Egg hunt planned April 10

ELDORA - Joanna Heidemann moved to Eldora a little over a year ago with her three children Andy, 10, Abby, 5, and Jacob, 3. “I was in search of a mom’s group in town and I hit a lot of walls,” she said. “Being single, I was looking for a group where I could take my kids with me.”

Iowa’s Ride to roll

ELDORA – Iowa’s Ride, a bicycle trip across Iowa, which was canceled last year due to COVID concerns, has now been pared down to a long weekend event in Eldora.

Iowa’s Ride Weekender will take place July 16, 17 and 18 in Eldora. Most recently, Eldora was an overnight RAGBRAI stay in 2015.

Council adopts budget

ELDORA - The Eldora City Council met March 29 for a special meeting to adopt the budget and certification of city taxes for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2022. A public hearing was held, in which no comments were made.

Net Current Property Taxes for Budget Financial Year 2022 is set at $1,316,094. Totals Revenues and Other Sources is $5,524,537. Total Government Activities Expenditures is $2,781,445. Total All Expenditures is $4,596,313. Excess Revenues & Other Sources Over (Under) Expenditures/Transfers Out is $74,396. Ending Fund Balance June 30 is set for $3,723,403.

Ernst visits Iowa Select

IOWA FALLS – Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst made a stop at the Iowa Select Farms office in Iowa Falls last Thursday as part of her 99 County Tour stop across the state. She spoke in a round-table format with a group of mostly Hispanic employees, and learned about TN nonimmigrant classification permits, which qualified Canadian and Mexican citizens to seek temporary entry into the United States in an effort to engage in business activities at a professional level. To qualify, people must have either eight years of experience working in their chosen profession, or possess a four-year degree.
