Familiar RAGBRAI photo snapped locally

ELDORA – A photo taken during RAGBRAI’s Eldora stop in 2015 has become almost the poster child for events in rural America. It started when Cara (Pence) Lott climbed on top of the Hardin County Savings Bank, snapped the now famous photo, and posted it to the RAGBRAI Eldora Facebook page.

The photo was later spotted, and in 2018, Andrea Parrott with RAGBRAI was contacted by Patty Arteaga, who works in Photo Acquisitions with Museums on Main Street, Smithsonian Traveling Exhibit Service. Arteaga had discovered the photo and was trying to track down the person who took it.

Saddling her passion

CLEVES - Turning dreams into reality has been a way of life for Natalie Cooley, and horses have been at the heart of it all. Cooley owns and operates Blazing Chance Stable, also known as Natalie’s Place, where she shares her passion for horses with others. She gives on average, a dozen riding lessons per week, as well as training and judging horse shows. Cooley manages to fit all this in her schedule along with working full-time at Hardin County Savings Bank in Eldora. Her days always start and end with chores, but she wouldn’t have it any other way.

ELDORA – New details have emerged about Iowa’s Ride, the bicycle trip originally slated last year to rival RAGBRAI and travel the opposite direction across Iowa, but was canceled due to COVID concerns. Now a pared-down and renamed event - Iowa’s Ride Weekender - will take place the weekend of July 16-18 in Eldora.

Registrations are coming in daily, said organizer Christie Pence. “We won’t really know how many to expect until much closer to the event,” she added.

Council OKs ATV permits, pool lighting

ELDORA - The Eldora City Council passed an ordinance, which allows permits to be given out in special cases for all-terrain vehicles to be allowed on city streets. With golf carts now legal in Eldora, ATV owners have approached city leaders as well. Permits will only be given for special events such as the county fair and Iowa Ride. The City of Eldora currently owns three ATVs, and it only makes sense to create a way for these vehicles to legally be driven on city streets.

BCLUW lifts mask mandate

CONRAD – The BCLUW School Board voted unanimously to remove the mask mandate at their March board meeting, said Superintendent Ben Petty, and that rule began on April 9.

ELDORA – The Eldora-New Providence School Board heard from several parents during their April 12 school board meeting, and all comments made were against the mask mandate, which was set in place as part of the Return to Learn plan, implemented at the beginning of the school year due to the pandemic.

Babe’s voted top steakhouse

RADCLIFFE – For a second time in a year, Babe’s Steakhouse in Radcliffe, owned by Jeff and Jann Friest, was voted as one of the top five steakhouses in central Iowa, however this time Babe’s took first place honors.

New salon opens doors

ELDORA – A new salon is open for business in Eldora’s Mini Mall, but the stylist is not new to the industry – or to Eldora. Alison Estes opened Alison’s Haircraft on April 15, coming home to the community where she was raised.

A 2011 South Hardin High School graduate, Estes attended La’ James in Cedar Falls and then worked at Salon Sovereign in Iowa Falls for 5 years. After that, she moved to Cedar Rapids with her significant other Alek Bracy, where she managed a SportClips and “perfected men’s cuts. So I really have that down.”
