Steamboat Rock Baptist Church welcomes new Worship Pastor

STEAMBOAT ROCK – John Day says, “if there is something musical, I have been involved in it.”

Day started his new position as Worship Pastor at Steamboat Rock Baptist Church on May 24, after spending 10 years at Prairie Lakes Church in Cedar Falls.

“While I was there (Prairie Lakes), I was always aware of this church,” he said of the Steamboat Rock Baptist Church. “I was aware of the reputation several years ago.”

UNION – A two-vehicle accident at the intersection of B Avenue and 330th Street (D67) in between Union and Conrad, sent several teenagers to the hospital during the afternoon of Tuesday, June 15.

According to an Iowa State Patrol Crash Report, a 2011 Chevy Cruze vehicle driven by Anistyn Borsch, 15, of Union, was eastbound on 330th Street and failed to yield to a stop sign at B Avenue. Teresa Hollingsworth, 50, Eldora, the driver of a 2012 Ford Expedition struck the Chevy Cruze on the driver’s side forcing both vehicles into the east ditch of B Avenue.

Sweeney facing lawsuit

HARDIN COUNTY – Former Hardin County Auditor Jessica Lara of Iowa Falls, has filed a lawsuit claiming slander against Sen. Annette Sweeney of rural Buckeye. The suit was filed June 7 in Franklin County, and e-filed to the Hardin County Clerk of District Court on June 9.

ELDORA – Even in the 90-degree heat, brothers Jim and Rob Blocker have a campfire going all day - and all night - in front of their rental cabin at Pine Lake State Park.

“I like cooking over the fire,” Jim said, motioning to the pile of wood and kindling the brothers hauled in for their stay.

“This morning we had breakfast over the fire in our cast iron skillet,” Rob added.

ELDORA – Hardin County Emergency Management Coordinator Thomas Craighton updated the Hardin County Board of Supervisors on the new Hardin County Alert Iowa system at their regular weekly meeting June 16.

“We’ve got all the communities set up on the alert system,” Craighton said. “So as people start signing up for the mass notification system, they can sign up for their communities and then they will be signed in for any alert that the community sends out.”

S.H. building updates in works

ELDORA - Stepping foot into the South Hardin High School, the evidence of progress is visible even during the first few weeks of summer break. Boxes of heat pumps have arrived and will be installed by four technicians in the next week. A cooling tower is in the process of being built and is set to be installed the first week of August.

STEAMBOAT ROCK - Pam Lippert learned the value of hard work years ago growing up on a farm in South Dakota. She started her career as an elementary teacher and then went on to marry her high school sweetheart, Harrison. However, Harrison’s education and career of serving in the military for 26 years required frequent moves. This provided Pam with a lot of practice turning new houses into real homes, often with the help of a few coats of paint.

Treasures from the Rose Garden

IOWA FALLS – Owasa resident Connie Rose had been aware of The Coffee Attic in Iowa Falls for several years, and last December brought her handcrafted items there to sell at a pop-up shop, at a friend’s suggestion.

“We had a really good response,” Rose said of the event. Her home-based business, Rose Garden Treasures, specializes in wooden plaques, signs, blocks, containers, and other homemade products. “I really enjoyed interacting with other people.”

Open containers allowed

ELDORA - The Eldora City Council will allow open containers during the Iowa’s Ride Weekender event July 16-18 in Eldora. The decision, which allows people to walk in between different venues in Eldora with an open container of alcohol, was made at the June 8 regular council meeting and passed by a 3-2 vote.

“This is much smaller than RAGBRAI,” City Administrator Aaron Budweg said. “Talking to law enforcement, it is easier to get a variance for law enforcement without worrying about someone walking down the street with an open container.”

Eldora budget, sewer service charge amended

ELDORA - The Eldora City Council held a special meeting the evening of June 7, and a resolution to amend the current budget for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2021, was passed. The reason for adjustments was additional revenue, including COVID-19 grants and reimbursements, and additional expenses, including increase in equipment cost and EMS billing. The pool and theater being closed last year were also factors. The Ending Fund Balance was raised from $3,713, 222 to $3,927,722.
