Mesch certified for Assessor's post

HARDIN COUNTY – Connie Mesch takes the reins at the Hardin County Assessor office during an interesting time. Real estate is showing new signs of life in Hardin County, and farmland values appear to have been rising. Meanwhile, COVID is gathering its reserves for another round of infections and worse, and naturally, everyone is wondering what impacts that could have on property.

The marketplace is after all what determines the output of the assessor’s office – as assessors are quick to remind people who often confuse the office in the courthouse with the actual market itself.

HARDIN COUNTY – While the world was shutting down during the summer of 2020, people were looking to the great outdoors for relief. There could only be abbreviated periods when the state park campground in Eldora opened, but those ended up proving boom times.

Tractorcade tradition continues

HARDIN COUNTY–Share in someone else’s fun. Come Saturday, Aug. 14 you can dial up a good time at the Hardin County Farm Museum. It is this year’s Greenbelt Tractorcade, where vintage, and even not-so-vintage tractor enthusiasts gather for their annual summer ride though a scenic portion of Hardin County.

Each summer for close to twenty years the museum has put out the call to old time tractor enthusiasts. Everyone who pre-registered gets a place in line, fast tractors to the front, slow bringing up the rear.

Hutchcroft receives Meritorious Civilian Service award

STEAMBOAT ROCK – Randall Hutchcroft, son of Bob and Vickie Hutchcroft of Steamboat Rock, has been presented the Award for Meritorious Civilian Service by the Department of the Air Force. The award was made in recognition of his distinguished performance as Country Director for Egypt and Saudi Arabia from September 2016 to February 2021, while employed by the Department of the Defense.

This award is the third highest civilian award that can be presented by the Air Force. Hutchcroft continues his government service employment in Washington, D.C. He is a 2004 AGWSR graduate.

Hot, dry temps stressing crop

ELDORA – It’s been hot and it’s been dry. Between April 1 and the end of July this year, Eldora has only seen 46 percent of normal rainfall, said Angie Rieck-Hinz, Iowa State University Extension Field Agronomist. “We were also dry last year, so we certainly did not have a full soil profile that got us into the growing season. We’re way behind on precipitation.”

This is a critical time for corn, Rieck-Hinz continued, noting that moisture right now is essential for good pollination. “We don’t want a lot of heat stress to ensure even and good pollination.”

STEAMBOAT ROCK – Some obvious construction has been going on in downtown Steamboat Rock - a large new addition is being built on the east side of the bar Happenings at 508 W. Market St.

Owners Todd Fleming and Heidi Young are expanding and will have a Full Swing Golf Simulator installed and available for all by late fall or early winter. “We’re starting with one (simulator) and hope to have room for two in the future,” Fleming said. “It will be private, and people will be able to come in and out of the bar to use it.”

New volunteers sought for food shelf

ELDORA – Ione Ziesman and Fran Meeker started working at the Pine Lake Food Shelf in July 1993 and have 50 years of combined experience between them. “Fran has been doing all the work for many years,” Ione stated.

“No I haven’t,” Fran insisted. “I haven’t done anything for years.”

“Fran is on our board, but has retired from working here,” Jerry Kramer said, adding that she serves on the board with himself, Nancy Callaway, Marilee Lawler and Susie Devries.

EMS receives $100,000 worth of ventilators

ELDORA – EMS Director Maile Carter recently applied for a grant through the Iowa Department of Public Health and received three critical care transport ventilators for the department.

“I kind of took a chance on it and got them new,” Carter said. “Each truck will have a ventilator in it. They are state of the art, like what a hospital uses.”

Carter said these ventilators had eight years of development put into them and are like five machines in one. “If you had to buy one, they are $25,999 each,” she said.

Bridge and 500 Marathon results for 2020-2021

Another fun year is completed. Winners for the afternoon Bridge: Eva Tupker and Polly Granzow. Winners for 500: Marianne Gatton and Polly Granzow. Entry fees supported Dorothy's Senior Center, and the Eldora Library.
