ELDORA - Eldora Chamber of Commerce head Brett Pfaltzgraff said recently that organizers of this year’s Pine Lake Festival hope to have as many as 4,000 people enjoying three days of events. They anticipate motorcycle and vintage car rallies, the unveiling of a new disc golf course and the introduction of a new bike trail. There are multiple music offerings and tours of the high school for the class-reunion-minded.

That disc golf project is currently under construction out at Memorial Park and tentatively set for a ribbon cutting on July 30 right in the middle of the festival.

School eyes September bond vote

ELDORA - Last week the Eldora-New Providence School Board voted to submit a bond issue to voters in September, hoping to raise almost $10 million dollars to finance projects on the downtown elementary campus and at the high school. It would also cover the cost of replacing the downtown Eldora middle school gymnasium.

The board is now asking the county auditor to set a vote on the issue for September.

Street project set to launch

ELDORA - The long-in-the-creating 11th Avenue street project took a bumpy path to its date with contractors this summer. The project ran into a spurt of ill-timed inflation and other obstacles before the Eldora City Council decided to push ahead in the face of higher prices and some contractor misgivings.

When council members met last Monday, it was to tie up the final finance details on the project. The council had already met for multiple public hearings and preliminary votes.

Garden Party: Art in the Greenbelt event to blossom

STEAMBOAT ROCK – Susie DeVries at 101 S. River Road in Steamboat Rock will be hosting the inaugural Art in the Greenbelt Garden Party on Saturday, June 4.

“This is something new to us and a new concept,” said Jackie Hagberg, one of the event’s creators.

Twelve to 15 artists will set up pieces around DeVries’ yard for the 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. event, including works of mixed media, paintings, pottery and drawings. Daniel Adams of Eldora and Sandy Trampe of Steamboat Rock will also be displaying their artwork.

“It won’t be crafts,” Hagberg affirmed.

It’s here! Trail makes way to town

ELDORA - When the weather cleared, the paving started and crews looked to make short work of the River’s Edge Trail segment between Steamboat Rock and Eldora.

Work on the bike-and-multiple use trail had been poised to take off for a couple of seasons. Organizers still say there are some limits on any advance south of Eldora this summer, but 2022 will definitely mean some milestones.

New faces at Pine Lake: Park Manager, Resource Technician hired

ELDORA - Pine Lake State Park has two new staff members, Park Manager Corey Fangman and Resource Technician Jordan Munson both started in early April. Fangman replaces longtime Park Manager Don Primus, who retired last year, and interim manager, Park Ranger Andy Place, who recently took a job at Big Creek State Park near Polk City.

In addition to Pine Lake, Fangman also manages Union Grove State Park in Gladbrook. “I will be handling both,” he said. “I’ll be at Pine Lake twice a week. The state is moving toward managing different areas as one unit.”

Eldora alum’s students plan Memorial Day concert

ELDORA – A 1987 Eldora-New Providence High School graduate is returning to the musical stageJen Reece, Director of Choral Activities at Dunlap High School in Dunlap, Ill., thought her students should perform a vocal concert in Eldora, since she is originally from the area, namely New Providence.

“My students have been to New York City, Boston and Colorado Springs,” Reece said. “This year we are going to Salt Lake City in Utah.”
