On the road again

Eddie Bridges is back on the road again. At one time or another, most of Eldora has caught a glimpse of Bridges and his one-man traveling cleanup campaign. It’s Bridges atop his bicycle cruising the town, sightseeing and often pulling a collection wagon, picking up things the garbage man missed. Trouble is, all those miles eventually wear out a vehicle. And so the bike finally gave out a few days ago. But, not to worry. Bridges has a guardian angel in John Kelly of Eldora. Kelly and a friend, who wishes to remain anonymous, were soon on Facebook and soon the donations started rolling in.

Waste water Leak fixed

ELDORA—A leak in a pipeline leaving the Eldora wastewater treatment plant saw treated wastewater directed into the Iowa River for about a week, but city officials now say the situation has been corrected.

Last week City Administrator Aaron Budweg said City Hall wanted to stress that the DNR was reporting “treated” water was discharged. That discharge, he said, had gone through the all-but-full treatment cycle, but there remained a final ultraviolet light disinfection stage, which was interrupted.

Primary 2022: Meggers wins, incumbents hold on

HARDIN COUNTY – In the only locally contested race in last Tuesday’s Primary Election, Republican Joshua Meggers won the State Representative District 54 seat by 440 votes, beating contender and Republican Robert Nazario. Although Nazario won by a lead of 96 votes in Hardin County, he lost in both Grundy and Black Hawk counties. The total votes were Meggers: 1,736 and Nazario: 1,296.

Talking trash: Jass hired as RIWMA director

ELDORA– A new director has been hired for Hardin County’s Rural Iowa Waste Management Association (RIWMA), after the board relieved former director Dan Aastrup of his duties last November.

Harm Jass, 33, of Parkersburg stepped in as director on May 14, after spending the previous 12 years at Brown Nationalease, the last two as shop foreman. He received a General Studies degree from the University of Northern Iowa in 2019.

Adventure awaits: Rock-n-Row open for season

ELDORA – It’s official. Rock-n-Row Adventures has started their 2022 season, opening on Memorial Day weekend, and will soon be filled with campers, music and fun on the water with tubes and kayaks.

Owners Tracy and Sondra Morlan are ready, and are hoping for a hot, sunny summer.

The Morlans have been hosting tubers on the river since the 1990s, but settled into their location at 23539 First St., just east of Eldora on Highway 175, in 2003. Previously the property had been used as a driving range and mini golf course.

Eldora addresses treatment plant leak

ELDORA—A leak in a pipeline leaving the Eldora wastewater treatment plant saw treated wastewater directed into the Iowa River last Tuesday. City Administrator Aaron Budweg said City Hall wanted to stress that the DNR was saying “treated water, not untreated” was discharged. Water being released, he said, had gone through the full treatment cycle, and there remained only a final ultraviolet light disinfecting stage.

He said that the last step had to be temporarily bypassed to allow the leak to be fixed.

Road trip! Going electric on the Lincoln Highway

ELDORA – Jack Smith of Morro Bay, Calif., had already been through Eldora on his way east, and last week, stopped again on his way back home to California. Smith has been traveling the Lincoln Highway in a converted 1963 VW bus, following in the tracks of Horatio Jackson who documented his 1903 journey from San Francisco to New York City in a Winton touring car.

A place for those in need: Hardin County, Iowa Helps marks one year at warehouse

ELDORA – The idea started with a Facebook page in 2020, then moved to a warehouse in 2021. Now Hardin County, Iowa Helps, just marked their one-year anniversary at their brick motor location in May.

The purpose of Hardin County, Iowa Helps is to be a place where people can donate items for others to come and take for free. Their location at the old Dodger Building at 1709 15th Ave. has also been donated to the cause, and people are able to come and “shop” for items.

Primary Day 2022: Voters head to the polls across Iowa

ELDORA – Today is the Primary Election in Iowa, and polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. across Hardin County, and the state. Primary elections are always held the first Tuesday after the first Monday in June, in even numbered years. The candidates elected in the Primary Election will be on the November ballot later this year.
