Football preview: Young Tigers taking their time

Seventy percent of the South Hardin football team is underclassmen this season.

That’s a departure from years’ past, and leaves the Tigers starting from scratch in some areas as they prepare for this Friday’s home opener against Grundy Center.

South Hardin came up short of last year’s regional final finish but finished the summer with a second-consecutive 20-win season.

The Tigers were 7-4 in the NICL West, finishing in second place behind East Marshall. Sophomore Hailey Rosonke led the Tigers as a first-team all-state pitcher, all-district selection and unanimous first-team All-NICL West selection. Sam Preston, Ellie Anderson and Jaidyn Teske were all second team All-NICL West.

South Hardin competed in its first season under new head coach Dan Huntley this summer. After a midseason swoon, the Tigers closed out the season in a way that left Huntley optimistic for what’s to come.

On this year’s All-NICL West team, the Tigers were led by two second-team representatives in senior pitcher Mason Sheldahl and freshman catcher Jaxson Drury. Ryan Walters, a junior, received honorable mention.

South Hardin won five of its first nine games, including an early-season doubleheader split with Grundy Center with a 5-1 win in Eldora on June 3.

Emily Stoulil has had a life-long love for running. She has participated in many 5ks, often pushing young sons Everett and Lincoln in a double stroller, and still finishing towards the top of the pack. Stoulil, who along with her husband Zak own Eldora Family Chiropractic & Wellness Center, enjoys getting outside in nature and meeting people while running. She describes running as a good me time activity for someone with little kids, and it’s a great feeling when you can work towards and accomplish your goals.

Tigers knocked out by Spartans

GRUNDY CENTER – South Hardin softball couldn’t crack Grundy Center during the teams’ three-game series earlier this summer.

The Tigers fared slightly better the fourth time around in a regional semifinal with the Spartans, but the rivals from Grundy Center prevailed once again behind an 18-strikeout performance from ace pitcher Emma Beck in a 5-3 Tiger loss, ending South Hardin’s season on Friday, July 8.

“We had more confidence and were able to put the ball in play better,” said South Hardin head coach Becky Rosonke. “I was proud of them for that.”

BCLUW softball ends rebound season in semis

CLARKSVILLE – The BCLUW softball team only managed four hits against Clarksville in a 9-0 loss at the Clarksville softball field in a regional semifinal last Friday.

The Comet campaign closed at 16-15. BCLUW was 3-31 last season.

“To get to the third round this year and get 16 wins is pretty awesome,” BCLUW coach Megan Yantis said. “I’m super proud of this group.”

The Indians shut down any and all scoring opportunities, keeping any Comet from reaching second. Clarksville starter Sierra Vance struck out 10 with one walk and the four hits allowed in the shutout.

Comets pick up game with ranked 1A squad

BCLUW softball was scheduled to play one final regular-season game against 1A No. 15 Central City on Friday, July 1 in Conrad.

The Wildcats are rated 15th in Class 1A and squeaked out a 2-1 victory over BCLUW at the Bobcat Classic in Marshalltown on Saturday, June 25.

The game occurred after this issue went to press. BCLUW begins the postseason at home on Wednesday, July 6 against either Lynnville-Sully or GMG.

BCLUW went 0-4 at the Bobcat Classic, falling to Marshalltown (4-2), Colfax-Mingo (7-2), 1A No. 3 Lisbon (10-0) and Central City.

Cougars win final tune-up for postseason

AGWSR defeated Aplington-Parkersburg 11-5 on Wednesday, June 29 in Ackley, in the Cougars final game before the postseason.

In a tournament at Roland-Story last weekend, AGWSR also defeated Colo-NESCO 8-1. East Marshall swept the Cougars in the NICL West doubleheader finale in Le Grand on June 27 and Sumner-Fredericksburg/Tripoli defeated AGWSR 10-2 on June 28.

Stats were not available for the Cougars’ losses.

The Cougars (3-24) opened the postseason at home against winless Northwood-Kensett, in a game that was played after this issue went to press.

Cougars take two from Mustangs

AGWSR baseball wrapped up the NICL West schedule with two wins over East Marshall on Monday, June 27 in Gilman.

The Cougars won Game 1, 8-7, and Game 2, 8-6.

AGWSR finished third in the West with an 8-7 record. The Cougars lost two crossover games against Sumner-Fredericksburg/Tripoli (10-0, June 28) and Aplington-Parkersburg (19-6, June 29) ahead of Saturday’s postseason opener at North Tama, which was played after this issue went to the press.

The winner of the AGWSR/North Tama game plays either Wapsie Valley or Hudson in North Tama at 5 p.m. on Tuedsay.

Comets split with South Hardin

BEAMAN – BCLUW snapped a nine-game losing streak with a 6-2 triumph over South Hardin on Monday, Game 1 of an NICL West doubleheader with the Tigers.

South Hardin bit back in Game 2 for a 16-5 victory to salvage the split.

Walker Ashton picked up the win on the mound for the Comets, going six and two-third innings with one earned run allowed on seven hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.

Ashton had two hits with one RBI to help himself out. Gus Callaway added an RBI and scored twice for the Comets.
