AGWSR boys advance

ACKLEY- Come tournament time it does not matter if it is a pretty or ugly victory - just win.

The AGWSR boys’ basketball team took the latter here Saturday, beating North Tama in a foul-fest, 56-43 during a Class 1A district quarterfinal contest.

“Survive and advance, that is all you want to do at tournament time,” said AGWSR coach Russ Banzhaf.

The Cougars won a rough-and-tumble contest where 51 fouls were whistled, including several charges, four players fouled out – two for both teams, and another five finished with four fouls.

The two teams combined for 50 free throws that finished in favor of AGWSR thanks to the nearly sure-fire Alex Hames. Hames sank 15-of-18 free throws as the Cougars went 19-of-29 to the Red Hawks 10-of-21.
