Born Marilyn Joyce Detrich on Oct. 14, 1931 in Marshalltown, Iowa, she was the daughter of Jacob Howard and Evelyn (Bridgman) Detrich. She grew up in Marshalltown, graduating from Miller High School in 1950. Joyce married her high school sweetheart, Harold Butler, on Feb. 26, 1950. They made their home in Union, where they raised their four children. They enjoyed camping together and loved to go dancing until Harold’s untimely passing in 1990.

Joyce worked several jobs over the years, including working at the grocery store, waitressing and cleaning houses. She was an exceptional baker, especially known for her pies, cookies and brownies. She even sold her baked treats to the Supper Club in Union for a time. Faith was important to Joyce and she was a member of the United Brethren Church in Marshalltown. In her free time, she enjoyed gardening and bird-watching. She was also an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs. More than anything else, Joyce loved being at home and spending time with her family.

Left to cherish her memory are her four children: Carol (Ralph) Crawford, Susan Butler, Jo Ellyn (Mike) Donaldson and Jeff (Crystal) Butler; grandchildren: Alan (Monica), Chris (Perin) and Keith; great-grandchildren: Colton and Regan; four brothers: Donald Detrich, Roger (Pam) Detrich, Dean (Noriko) Detrich and John (Judi) Detrich; and several nieces and nephews.

In eternal life, she was reunited with her beloved husband, Harold; her grandson, Shane Butler and three sisters: June Innis, Jeannette Detrich and Jean Woolf.
