Harriet J. Burns

Harriet J. Burns, formerly of Steamboat Rock, passed away peacefully June 19, 2021, at Valley View Village in Des Moines. She was born June 1, 1928, to Sara and Harry Maas in Wellsburg Iowa, the youngest of eight.

Together Harriet and husband John owned and ran Burns Grocery in Steamboat Rock from 1964 to 1981. Harriet continued to run the store for 10 years after John’s death. In 1991 she decided to pack her bags and headed to Yellowstone National Park where she worked for 20 summers. She officially retired in 2011.

Harriet is survived by three daughters, Sara (Dan) Havens, Rosie (George) Starr, Mykle (Mark) Fallis, six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. Harriet was preceded in death by her parents, siblings and husband, John.

A Family Graveside Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, 2021. Family and friends may stop by and extend condolences and share memories from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Boat Club in Steamboat Rock.

Memorial contributions in Harriet’s honor may be made to the Steamboat Rock Historical Society or the Steamboat Rock Library.
