Starr led Cougars topple Comets

SHEFFIELD- A game-high 28-point performance by Luke Starr propelled the AGWSR boys’ basketball team over BCLUW, 65-57 during a Class 1A district quarterfinal contest here Thursday.

The Cougars scored eight of the game’s first 10 points and set the pace throughout. AGWSR owned leads of 15-9 after one quarter, 31-18 at halftime and 47-37 through three.

The victory was the first away from Ackley and improved AGWSR to 9-13 overall after the Cougars went 8-2 at home and 0-11 on the road during the regular season.

“It is a good win. We played well, not our best, but it was a good team effort. A playoff win is a playoff win,” noted AGWSR coach Ryley Schipper.

Starr tallied 14 points apiece in the first and second halves to finish one-point off his career-high. The senior, who is averaging 16.4 points per game, made 11 field goals with two three-balls and four free throws.

BCLUW battled back in the second half with 39-points over the final 16-minutes. The Comets had the double-digit gap closed to five-points in the final minutes with a chance at three.

“It was a frustrating game,” noted BCLUW coach Evan Janssen. “We got down early and that has happened this season when we want to win so bad and gone away from our gameplan. We made a nice comeback, but dug ourselves a deep hole.”
