Real life at the Abbey

If you are a fan of the Public Television series Downton Abbey, the Friends of the Library here in Eldora have a treat you won’t want to miss.

They are presenting a free 90 minute program: “Downstairs at Downton” featuring historian Kathy Wilson at the Eldora Public Library at 1 p.m. Tuesday, November 13.

Wilson has created a whole series o f h istorical p ieces e xamining the truth behind some of the best known and loved stories of recent years – literary and cinematic.

‘Downstairs’ examines what life was really like below t he stairs at a place like Downton Abbey. Could the chauffeur really marry t he daughter o f an Earl? Would a m aid help move a dead body to protect her mistress’ reputation? What about all that free time? Historian Wilson reveals the answers to these questions and more in this program focusing on the realities of domestic service at someplace like Highclere Castle, during the early 20th Century, in the real Downton Abbey, Wilson will give a presentation about the actual running of just such a house.
