Ellsworth invites local finance experts to help teach

If you know your finance – meaning you are in one of its many professions, and would like to help some young people out – Iowa Valley Community College has an opportunity for you.

Iowa Valley has what it terms an Intermediary program which brings students, sometimes at the college, and sometimes, like this time, from area high schools, in contact with professionals who can give them an idea of what their studies hold in the work-a-day world.

The latest offering is a Financial Literacy Fair for area high school students on Thursday March 8th from 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m; morning Session (Group 1) from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and afternoon Session (Group 2) from 11:45 a.m. – 2 p.m. on the Ellsworth Community College campus. Very similar to the fair last year, students will chose a career path, determine the necessary education level for the career, and calculate their expected monthly income (financial simulation). Financial advisors meeting one on one with students is critical to this simulation.

Last year several local Hardin County sophomores participated in the 1st annual Financial Literacy Fair. Students visited with financial advisors from area banks to discuss their personal budgets. Schools that attended included Iowa Falls- Alden, AGWSR and South Hardin.

Coordination with the students attending is being done by the college and the local school districts. But the invite is out now to people in the financial services field who might like to help out for a day or two.
