King loses seat in primary

ELDORA – With a total of 2,621 unofficial votes cast in Hardin County, the 2020 Iowa Primary Election saw only one upset - Steve King’s U.S. House Republican seat in the Fourth District. King of Kiron, Iowa, has held his seat since 2003 and lost to Hull resident and State Senator Randy Feenstra. Statewide, Feenstra defeated King by a margin of nearly 10 points – 45.7 to 36 percent. All local seats were uncontested, while the Democratic U.S. Senate race went to Theresa Greenfield, who will take on Joni Ernst in the general election this fall.

2020 Hardin County Fair to be a youth exhibitor fair

ELDORA – The Hardin County Fair, in partnership with Iowa State University Extension of Hardin County, is planning for a 2020 Youth Exhibitor Fair only. They are currently working together to finalize a modified fair experience which will provide opportunities for 4-H and FFA members to showcase their learning, and to receive evaluation and recognition. All livestock will be shown in an abbreviated format on a daily basis. Details are forthcoming.

ELDORA – A cloudy start and few shots of rain over the Memorial Day holiday weekend did not stop campers from filling up Pine Lake State Park, according to Don Primus, State Park Manager. “We are at 97 percent capacity of our electric sites,” he said the Friday before the holiday weekend. The non-electric sites were at 50 percent capacity, but Primus anticipated that number could rise.

“They started coming in on Wednesday and Thursday,” he said, noting that campers come as far away as Wisconsin and Minnesota. “We’ll catch them (campers) now because of the shut down.”

Memorial Day remembrances

ELDORA – Not quite 10 years ago, staff at the State Training School enlisted the students in a Memorial Day project rejuvenating an almost forgotten graveyard on the school grounds.

Restoring the site unearthed some life stories right out of your Charles Dickens reader.

None was better than that of Roscoe Schaul:

In true Dickens form, a boy dies and nobody claims him. For a time, burial is a problem. Finally he is borne by a team of horses and a wagon, across 100 miles of dirt roads.

He’s put to rest and Roscoe Schaul lapses into obscurity.

COVID gardening: The new Victory

ELDORA- During both World War I and World War II, Victory Gardens sprung up across countries including the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and Germany. Citizens planted vegetables, fruits and herbs at private residents as well as public parks, with the idea of making sure there was enough food for themselves, as well as returning soldiers. Digging in a garden was also a way to release stress and boost morale during difficult war times.

ELDORA – They say, when one door closes, another opens and Eldora resident Rosanne Primus had just had a door close - she needed a job. Primus was employed at Dodger Industries in Eldora and when she received notice she would be laid off, she decided, “I’ll create my own job.” And to that, Backwoods Gallery became a reality.

HARDIN COUNTY – If you are not a regular at Pine Lake, but want to test the waters, this coming weekend is a unique opportunity. The first weekend of each June is designated the states free fishing opportunity.

It means you can fish without a license.

And with that invite out, the Iowa DNR is also taking the opportunity to ask fishermen, novice and other, to keep in mind the health emergency.

Primary Election voting changes

ELDORA – Hardin County will be split into two precincts for the June 2 (today) primary election. The voting locations are the Eldora Emergency Operation Center at 1031 Edgington Ave., Eldora; and the Ellsworth Equine Center Ag and Renewable Energy Center Classroom, 709 Ellsworth Ave., Iowa Falls. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Residents living in Eldora/Pleasant/Providence/Union townships, Concord/Sherman/Grant/Tipton townships, cities of Radcliffe, Hubbard, New Providence, Union, Whitten and Eldora will vote at Eldora Emergency Operation Center.

It’s official – Iowa’s Ride is back

ELDORA – A week ago the organizers of Iowa’s Ride confirmed that the ride is back on next summer’s calendar, and it will be making an overnight stop in Eldora on July 20.

The cross-state ride, which had fallen victim to the pandemic and prohibitions against large crowds, had once promised 5,000 people visiting Eldora and staying overnight this summer.

ELDORA – The Eldora Public Library is excited to once again be swinging its doors open to eager readers starting June 1. While it has been open for appointments only, librarians Joan Grothoff, Susan Hassman, and Elaine Bahr have not taken a moment to rest. Returning eyes will be greeted by many improvements, including a freshly painted mural, bright new curtains and rugs, and an array of fascinating reading material. The children’s area has been rearranged, and the ultimate goal has been to make the library more user friendly.
