COVID-19 has just wrecked everything

I’m getting a little antsy. Usually at the end of July or beginning of August, it’s vacation time for me. A big one was planned this year too, until this COVID-19 business showed up. And it was going to be good. Everyone was going to meet in my hometown in Colorado to celebrate a couple of special birthdays.

South Hardin softball season ends due to COVID-19 test result

ELDORA – South Hardin Superintendent Dr. Adam Zellmer announced Thursday that the remainder of the 2020 softball season has been canceled after a member of the South Hardin softball team was confirmed to have COVID-19.

Hardin County sees more young adults infected with COVID-19

ELDORA - Greenbelt Home Care/Hardin County Public Health continues to work with the Iowa Department of Public Health and a number of other local agencies to contain the spread of COVID-19 in our community. As of June 26, there are 58 confirmed positive cases in Hardin County, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health website. Twenty-four have recovered from COVID-19, are no longer considered infectious, and are now under the same recommendations as the general public. Currently, there are 27,473 confirmed positive cases in Iowa.

ELDORA - The Hardin County Fairgrounds were brightened up with balloons, blazing country music, and the smiling faces of South Hardin Seniors on Sunday, June 7. It was time for a walk- thru/drive-thru graduation reception recognizing the hard-working students who will be remembered as the ones who were quarantined.

Tiger baseball home opener canceled

South Hardin baseball’s 2020 home opener against Aplington-Parkersburg, scheduled for Tuesday, June 16, was canceled after members of the Aplington-Parkersburg baseball team went into self-quarantine following exposure to people who later tested positive for COVID-19.

No Aplington-Parkersburg players had tested positive, but guidelines from the Iowa Department of Public Health state that even those who test negative who are “close contacts of a confirmed case should continue to self-quarantine until 14 days after their last exposure to the confirmed cases.”

COVID gardening: The new Victory

ELDORA- During both World War I and World War II, Victory Gardens sprung up across countries including the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and Germany. Citizens planted vegetables, fruits and herbs at private residents as well as public parks, with the idea of making sure there was enough food for themselves, as well as returning soldiers. Digging in a garden was also a way to release stress and boost morale during difficult war times.

Warm welcome: Justin Weber returns home after COVID-19 hospitalization

ELDORA – Justin Weber, Eldora resident, pastor and owner of antique store The Pickin’ Preacher, returned home May 20 after a COVID-19 diagnosis which had left him hospitalized since March 26. Weber was also the first case reported in Hardin County, which, as of press-time, now has 13 cases.

COVID-19 impacting Iowa Select Farms

ELDORA- Iowa Select Farms has made the decision to euthanize some of their herds due to the COVID-19 outbreak. “It has been a pretty rough stretch of time these past couple weeks,” said Iowa Select’s Director of Health Services Pete Thomas. “We’ve had limited chances to sell our pigs.”

Current pandemic echoes flu epidemic 100 years ago

ELDORA – It was 100 years ago, and another pandemic was up and rolling across the nation. But, perhaps because the county had spent the first half of the year concerned with World War I, you might not have known there was a flu epidemic, at all. At least based on accounts in the Eldora Newspapers of the time.

The local papers of that time routinely offered coverage of national and even world news, but they made scant reference to flu deaths here or anywhere else for that matter, until the war ended and the front pages suddenly began repeating a headline writer’s dream:

Governor lifts some campground restrictions

DES MOINES -- Today, Governor Kim Reynolds directed the opening of state-owned campgrounds in Iowa, effective Friday, May 8, 2020.

The Iowa DNR opened state campgrounds at 8 a.m. on Friday, May 8 to campers with self-contained restrooms only. Self-contained is defined as a tent or pop-up camper with a portable toilet or an RV with a functioning, self-contained bathroom. Walk-in campers may begin registering at 8 a.m.

Monday, May, 11: reservations will go into effect
