Spartans sweep Tiger boys

ELDORA – Grundy Center defeated South Hardin, 6-0, in boys tennis action in Eldora last Tuesday.

The matches were contested using pro-10 scoring. Tanner Laube defeated Landon Rewoldt 10-2 at No. 1 singles. Rewoldt and Braxton Lu fell to Sloan Klar and Bryce Greiner, 10-4, at No. 1 doubles.

Engle on all-state 3rd team

BCLUW's Allison Engle earned a third-team slot on the Class 1A all-state teams released by the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association last Tuesday.

The Comet senior led the team with 15.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 3.0 steals per game.

Engle finished her career with 1,094 points and 533 rebounds, and 200+ carer assists and steals.

Tiger boys track open at Wartburg

South Hardin boys track and field burst out of the blocks at a Wartburg indoor meet on Tuesday, March 8.

The Tigers had three top-3 finishes, led by Mason Sheldahl taking second in the long jump after clearing 19 feet even. De’Anthony Jackson of West Des Moines Valley won the event with a 19-7 mark.

Colton McDonald added a bronze medal in the high jump after getting over the bar at 5 feet, 6 inches.

Waylen Butler finished third in the 55-meter hurdle finals in 8.89 seconds, with teammate Ryan Walters close behind in 8.91 seconds for fourth.

ALL-NICL WEST BOYS BASKETBALL

South Hardin senior Mason Sheldahl was honored as a unanimous first-team selection to the 2021-22 All-NICL West boys basketball team released last weekend.

Sheldahl averaged 14 points and 6.9 rebounds per game in division play for the Tigers that finished third in the West with a 6-4 record. Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s William Kiburis and Tristen Sanford-Anders were the other two unanimous selections to the first team.

Ryan Walters was the other Tiger named to the first team, leading South Hardin averaging 16.4 points per game and averaging 4.6 and 4.3 assists per game.

Tiger girls’ upset bid falls short

SHEFFIELD – The South Hardin girls basketball team was coming off one of its best single-quarter performances of the season.

The Tigers rode that momentum into Sheffield against West Fork and took it to the 17-win Warhawks, and a few missed offensive chances was all that kept South Hardin from a regional quarterfinal upset, as West Fork escaped with a 50-43 victory on Tuesday, Feb. 15.

West Fork went on to defeat South Hamilton in the semifinals and will play Dike-New Hartford for a spot at the 2A state tournament.

Confident Kolthoff earns bronze

DES MOINES – Carter Kolthoff turned some heads at the state tournament last weekend.

South Hardin-BCLUW’s 120-pound senior, ranked sixth going into the tournament, finished third in Class 2A, with four wins against ranked opponents including three that were ranked ahead of him going into Thursday's opening round at Wells Fargo Are-na.

Tiger boys battle in playoff tune-ups

After wrapping up third place in the NICL West, the South Hardin boys basketball team had a couple of solid NICL crossover matchups against Jesup and Dike-New Hartford, readying the Tiger boys for their postseason opener against East Marshall, which was at Eldora on Monday, Feb. 14.

The South Hardin boys fell to Jesup, 89-60, after a strong start; then got into a first-half hole against D-NH, losing 51-43.

Mason Sheldahl led the Tigers with 18 points against Jesup; Ryan Walters added 17 points and eight rebounds and Jake Teske scored 13 points.

Cougar matmen stopped short of state

DENVER – Four AGWSR wrestlers ended their season at a 1A district tournament at the Cyclone Center in Denver on Saturday.

Noah Clikeman, Kaden Abbas, Bo Gerbracht and Tate Miller all finished fourth in their respective brackets on Saturday. The top two in each bracket advanced to the state tournament in Des Moines, which begins on Thursday. The Cougars had a fifth district qualifier, senior Lane Abbas, who was unable to compete on Saturday due to injury.

All four Cougar grapplers ended up with a gauntlet to try and get to state.

Comet girls charm Rebels

REINBECK – The BCLUW girls basketball team had two close battles with NICL West foe Gladbrook-Reinbeck earlier this season.

In the end, the Rebels swept the season series with the Comets, which allowed G-R to host Thursday’s regional opener against the Comets.

The third time was the charm for the Comets, knocking off the Rebels, 40-37, at G-R High School.

The Comets (14-8) will travel to Springville to face the Orioles (20-1) on Tuesday, Feb. 15. G-R’s season ends at 9-14.

Tiger girls rally to advance past Mustangs

ELDORA – There were too many missed opportunities for South Hardin head coach Nick Eller to feel great about Saturday’s postseason opener with East Marshall.

But Eller saw that the Tigers were there more often than not to give themselves more opportunities, and eventually the shots started falling and South Hardin roared back to beat the Mustangs, 47-36, and win their last home game of the season at South Hardin High School.

The Tigers (6-16) ended a three-game winless streak and will take on West Fork (17-4) in Sheffield at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 15.
