These elegant Trumpeter Swans enjoyed the open water on Lower Pine Lake last week, preening, swimming and wandering around on the icy edge. Once endangered and now under protective status in Iowa, Trumpeter Swans are recovering in numbers across the U.S. and Canada. They are North America’s heaviest flying bird with a wing-span of 8 feet, and can weigh up to 30 pounds.
