AGWSR Cougars back on track with 3-1 win over Cadets

IOWA FALLS – AGWSR (5-8) bucked a two-match losing trend when they met up with the Cadets (7-6) in Iowa Falls to close out September play. The Cougars took control with big spurts in key stretches to beat the Cadets in four sets.

The first half of the first set both teams were trying to find their footing. Some early miscues by the Cadets at the service line broke it open, and the Cougars did the rest. An AGWSR 5-2 run led to a six-point lead. Huge blocks at the net and equally massive kills awarded the Cougars a 25-15 set win.

Kolthoff leads Tigers to 7th place finish

NEVADA – South Hardin returned to a Nevada course on Sept. 28 they hadn’t run in years, and still ended up finishing seventh in the Varsity boys’ team standings. Karter Kolthoff led the way for the Tigers, finishing 14th with a time of 18:29.07. He staved off last-second bursts by peers Henry Kaisand of BCLUW and Kyle Vanderwal of Collins-Maxwell.

Second-half turnaround propels Tigers over Falcons, 41-13

PARKERSBURG – South Hardin football needed to break out of its funk.

A flat half of football at Aplington-Parkersburg ended with the Falcons leading 7-0 and the Tigers, seeking to avoid a third-consecutive loss, took a chance on an onside kick to start the second half.

Once they recovered the ball at midfield, the fuse was lit and the Falcons were blown away.

The Tigers scored 35 unanswered points in the second half of a 41-13 romp at Ed Thomas Field in Parkersburg to snap a two-game losing skid and improve to 4-2 overall.

Cougars Shock Warriors With Fourth-Quarter Surge

ROCKFORD – What matters most is how teams finish games. That notion was on full display Sept. 25 when AGWSR (3-2) traveled to play Rockford (2-3) under the Friday night lights. According to Quik Stats, the two teams hadn’t played each other since 2009. The Warriors had a 2-0 record in the series, but a late charge Friday by the Cougars earned themselves a 64-58 win of their own.

Cheer brings sense of normalcy during uncertain times

BCLUW – Nobody knew if there would be a fall athletics season when COVID wrought havoc in every possible way earlier this year. Athletes around the state held their breath with hopes that hours and weeks of practice wouldn’t go by the wayside. Low COVID positivity rates meant fall sports were a go throughout much of Iowa and cheer squads could get back to doing what they love.

Even with the green light, the BCLUW cheer team took a hit with COVID constantly a looming threat. Still, the girls and their coach, Ashley Wilson, are happy to be given the opportunity.

G-R middle hitters fuel victory at BCLUW

CONRAD – Gladbrook-Reinbeck volleyball once again showed poise under pressure against an NICL West foe with a straight-set victory against BCLUW on Tuesday.

The 1A No. 6 Rebels defeated the 1A No. 14 Comets, 25-17, 25-23, 25-19. G-R improved to 17-1 overall and remains tied atop the West standings at 3-0 alongside South Hardin. BCLUW fell to 9-5 and 1-1 in the West.

BCLUW Comet boys 6th at Sam Iverson Invite

GRUNDY CENTER – The BCLUW boys cross country team posted a sixth-place finish in the team standings at the Sam Iverson Invite held at Grundy Center's Town & Country Golf Course on Thursday evening.

The Comets scored 195 team points. Denver was the team champion with 37 points, followed by GC/G-R in second with 64 and East Marshall with 91 points. The South Hardin boys placed eighth with 226 points.

Top-ranked Spartans too much for Comets

GRUNDY CENTER – The BCLUW football team was unable to slow down undefeated Grundy Center in a 51-0 win for the Spartans on Friday night at Grundy Center High School.

Grundy Center, ranked No. 1 in Class A, improved to 5-0. BCLUW dropped to 1-4 and will head to North Mahaska next week.

"They are pretty special in all areas and we couldn't match them," BCLUW head coach Dustin Grothoff said. "Hats off to them."

Tigers Outlast Rival Cougars With Five-Set Thriller

Eldora – AGWSR (4-7) watched on as their rivals, South Hardin (14-6), celebrated a major accomplishment prior to their match on Sept. 22. Over the weekend at a tournament in Dike-New Hartford, Jaidyn Teske broke the school record for digs. Her teammates wanted to make sure they, and the South Hardin Community, could recognize her successes.

Teske’s teammates signed the game ball from Dike-NH and presented it to her as parents and peers cheered on. Her dad, co-head coach John Teske, made the announcement and let the girls take in the moment before getting down to business.

Tigers Stall Out on Senior Night
