E-NP pays $1 for center

ELDORA - The partnership began in controversy but progressed so routinely it all but slipped into obscurity. Today, most people don’t realize that for the last dozen years the Eldora-New Providence School district had been renting the children’s center daycare and preschool facility from the town of Eldora.

The city had underwritten construction of the annex, which houses the childcare and preschool. It rented the building to the school district, which had operational responsibility for the center.

Council lifts officer residency requirement

ELDORA - Times have changed. That was the consensus around the Eldora City Council table at their regular monthly meeting Dec. 14. Facing increasing difficulties in trying to recruit police officers to town, the vote was for eliminating what had been a longstanding requirement that any officer hired would have to agree to move to within a prescribed distance of the community. The latest requirement was within 20 miles. In years past it had been smaller still.

ELDORA – Rebekah Cullinan isn’t from Eldora, or even the Eldora area, but she has made this town her home. “I had looked for a place all over the state,” she said. “I just kept coming back to Eldora.”

The Des Moines native had received a nursing degree from Des Moines Area Community College and began a career as a traveling nurse. She spent time in places such as Michigan, Florida, San Diego, Phoenix and Las Vegas before she decided to come back to the Midwest and move closer to family in Des Moines.

Serial derecho blows through

ELDORA – Last Wednesday’s wild weather brought several warnings from high winds to thunderstorms to tornadoes. State Climatologist Justin Glisan said the storm may also be classified as a “serial derecho.”

“We’re still toying around with the term derecho,” Glisan said. “It matches the definition of a derecho, but there’s two types - a serial and a progressive derecho. The Aug. 10, 2020, event, which was the costliest storm in history, was a progressive derecho.”

HUBBARD – Rural Hubbard resident Rebecca Cook has only been making her knit hats for a few months. “I just started this fall,” the mom of two said. “I can’t crochet, but I can knit.”

Cook thought since colder weather was coming, she’d make some hats for her daughter, Sawyer, 2, and son, Carson, 1, and she found a pattern to use.

“I learned how to knit as a kid and hadn’t done it since then,” she said. “But it was like riding a bike and I jumped right back on.”

Executive producers Jack and Cathy Smith were in town recently to watch their movie New Providence at the Grand Theatre in Eldora. Jack Smith (pictured) also wrote the story, which was filmed at the Roundhouse in New Providence, the New Providence Hardware Store and Cafe, at the gymnasium in Hubbard, as well as around Des Moines and Van Meter. All proceeds from the Grand Theatre showing went back to the theater. Eldora man shot, killed in Iowa Falls altercation

IOWA FALLS – An altercation in Iowa Falls last Wednesday led to the shooting death of an Eldora man. According to a press release from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Jared Risius, 35, of Eldora, was identified as the deceased subject in an autopsy completed at the Office of the State Medical Examiner.

ELDORA – Pat Ryan met Hy-Vee while in high school. They've gone steady ever since.

Forty-eight years later, Ryan is closing out an entire career dedicated to the grocery industry – which by itself qualifies as extraordinary – but he also did it working for one employer.

Ryan has worked for Hy-Vee since he was 16 and will put in his last day Jan. 3.
