Thirty-nine men met together in Philadelphia and signed the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787. The U.S. Constitution has 4,400 words and is both the oldest and shortest written Constitution of any major government in the world. The document was penned by Jacob Shallus, a Pennsylvania General Assembly clerk, for $30. There were a total of 42 delegates who attended the convention, but three of them refused to sign. The youngest person to sign the Constitution was 26-year-old Jonathan Dayton of New Jersey. The oldest was Benjamin Franklin at 81.
