Orlan Floyd Mossman, son of Thomas and Pearl (Sheldon) Mossman, was born on December 15, 1936, in the family’s home in Hubbard, Iowa, during a winter blizzard. Due to weather conditions, the country doctor was unable to come out to the house to assist with the birth. Thomas hooked up his team of horses and went to the neighbor nearby and asked for help from his wife.

Orlan attended Dean Country School through 8th grade and graduated from Hubbard High School in 1955.

Orlan enjoyed fishing, hunting, ice skating on the creek, helping on the farm, and water skiing.

He enlisted in the Army in 1958, and then the joined the Air Force reserves.

Orlan was active in his community by serving on the Hubbard Co-op Elevator Board, Extension Board, various Church Boards, Sunday School, Awana, and the Lion’s Club. Orlan was a proud member of Point Pleasant Church until it’s closure, and then an active member of Faith Evangelical Church in Radcliffe, Iowa.

He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Nellie Popejoy, on November 21, 1959, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, in Radcliffe, Iowa. Together, they enjoyed life on the farm where they raised their two children.

Orlan and Nellie began a lifetime of farming. Orlan was a very humble and excellent steward of the land he had the privilege of farming for fifty years. While active in his career as an Agricultural professional, he always made time to take his family on many camping adventures. They retired from farming in 2006. At that time, they built a retirement home on the same land on which he was born. Together, they have enjoyed watching deer, Bald Eagles, turkeys, raccoons, and many other critters from their front porch while sipping their morning coffee.

Orlan had two passions in his life. The first, was the love he had for the Lord, Jesus Christ. Orlan put his trust in Christ as a young boy of 11 years old, on June 17, 1948, at Bible school. He demonstrated that love in how he lived his daily life. He was very generous with his time, talents and support to his home church, and to many missionaries all over the world.

Orlan’s second passion was the love he had for his family. As a dad, he rarely missed any of the activities that Linda and Mark participated in. As a grandpa, he enjoyed telling stories, exploring nature, and creating outdoor adventures with his grandchildren. As a beloved great grandpa, he was known as ‘Papa O’. His face would light up at the mention of their names, and he cherished his time with them.

Orlan went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, March 14, 2021, at the Hubbard Care Center. His family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Charlotte (Fisher) Cook, for her selfless decision by giving the gift of life through organ donation. We were blessed with eight more wonderful years with Orlan that we may not have had.

Those remaining to cherish his memory include his wife Nellie of Hubbard, Iowa; two children Linda (Bob) Imsland of Hubbard, Iowa, Mark (Deborah) of Zimmerman, MN; five grandchildren Lucas (Christi) Imsland, Jessi (Aaron) Duncan, Isaac (Laura) Imsland, Mitchell Mossman, Specialist Kylie Mossman U.S. Army; nine great-grandchildren Arianna and Elliott Imsland, Carsen, Madeline, and Josie Duncan, Madeline, Max and Henry Dewhurst, and Cecelia Imsland; brother Russell (Joyce) Mossman; along with many nieces and nephews.

Orlan is preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter Melissa Imsland, siblings Lawrence (Maxine) Mossman, Mildred (Myles) Miller, and Muriel Mossman.
