Larry Rexford Callaway was born Aug. 24, 1936 in Grundy County. He was the son of Carl and Margaret (Eggleston) Callaway. Larry grew up in Whitten and in 1947, his family moved to lake of the Ozarks in Missouri where he lived until 1953 when his family returned to Whitten. Larry was a graduate of the Whitten High School Class of 1954. Out of school, Larry worked for Dunham Bush in Marshalltown as a tool and die maker.
On June 24, 1956, Larry was united in marriage to Shary Hilsabeck. From this union, four children, Cindy, Ginger, Tracy and Kelli were born. Larry was remaining with Dunham Bush until 1960 when he and the family moved out to the farm where his true passion was. He adored farming and raised his crops and cattle year after year. He and Shary remained married until the time of her passing in 2015. Larry was then untied in marriage to Betty Hilsabeck. They remained on the family farm together. After retirement, Larry went to work for the Farm and Home Supply Store as an inventory specialist. Betty passed in 2023 and he remained on the family farm.
Larry was a member of the Whitten Community Church, local card clubs, bowling leagues and a board member of the Benson Cemetery. Ultimately, he was known to be a hard worker so in his free time he enjoyed riding motorcycles, going hunting, fishing and shooting guns. He was always cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes whenever they were playing. In his younger years, Larry loved to play basketball and baseball in school.
