James “Jim” Gerald Wooten

James “Jim” Gerald Wooten, 93, passed away on Aug. 31, 2022, in Dothan, Ala. after a gradual decline in health. Jim was born in Steamboat Rock, Iowa, on May 19, 1929, to parents Wallace Gerald Wooten and Sevilla (Gellhorn) Wooten.

Jim treasured growing up in Hardin County and enjoyed entertaining family with stories of his childhood on the farm and shenanigans of his youth, both true and fanciful. Born of tough and proud pioneer family stock, Jim held tight to his upbringing throughout his life. Jim left Iowa for service in the Navy where he excelled as an electrical engineer, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer. After his honorable service, Jim worked and retired from Sherwood Medical (Pfizer) in Deland, Fla.

Even though Jim was tough and firm, he had a playful sense of humor that will be sorely missed, particularly by his grandson Ryan, affectionally known to him as “Bub.”

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Earnestine (Graham), and brother Jon. Left to mourn his loss and treasure his memory are his beloved family: his son, James (Angela) Wooten of Dothan, Ala.; his daughter, Tricia (Andrew) McClenahan of Tallahassee, Fla.; two grandchildren, Elizabeth (Anthony) Kristensen and Ryan McClenahan, and three great-grandchildren (Hunter, Talan, and Cody).

As per his wishes, no funeral or memorial service will be held. The family invites those wishing to honor his life to donate to the Steamboat Rock Historical Society.
