Funeral services for Charles will be at 11:00 am Saturday, January 18, 2025, at Adams Celebration of Life in Owasa. A time of visitation will precede the service at 9:30 to 11:00 am, with a fellowship luncheon to follow at Noon. Burial will follow at the Jackson Township (Berlin) Cemetery. With honor, Adams Celebration of Life is serving the family.
Charles Milo Butler was born January 21, 1940, to Milo Dayton and Ethel May (Gast) Butler in Iowa Falls, Iowa. He attended Owasa Community Schools graduating with the Class of 1957. He attended Iowa State University briefly before returning to farm with his father and brother, George. On April 29, 1958, Charles was united in marriage to Hope Lynnette Upchurch and to this union were born a son, Tim, and daughter, Tanya. Charles and Lynnette later divorced. Charles farmed the family farm in Jackson Township until his retirement in 2005 and was the last family member to do so on the Century farm, founded in 1880. Charles was an accomplished gunsmith and enjoyed shooting sports of all kinds. In his retirement, Charles discovered 50 caliber bmg shooting and competed in matches in Raton, NM, Alliance, NE, Rattlesnake Mountain, WA and other places. Charles was awarded the President’s Award for Distinguished Service by the Fifty Caliber Shooters Association in 2015, and among his many trophies, including a 3rd place finish in the World Championships at age 78, he considered this his most prized recognition. Charles displayed a unique charm and wit that made him a great friend to many in the shooting community, his family and the neighborhood, and eventually endeared him to his numerous caregivers. While not an active church member in later years, Charles confessed Jesus as his Savior and readily spoke about his theology and assurance of faith.
Charles Milo Butler is survived by his children: Tim (Sue) Butler of Waukesha, WI and Tanya (John) Butler-Browning of Oregon City, OR; 1 grandchild: Taylor (Kenzie) Browning of Tualatin, OR; and numerous loving nieces and nephews in the Butler, Whiting, and Granner families.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father; sister Norma Whiting; sister Janice Granner; and brother George.
On behalf of Charles, we want to thank the many caregivers at Treasured Hearts Home Care, Maple Manor Village, The Hanson Family Hospital, Green Belt Home Care and St. Croix Hospice for their loving care.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that a contribution be made to your favorite charity in Charles’ name.
