U-W girls state champions 50-years-ago

UNION- Fifty-years-ago today March 16, 1968 the Union-Whitten girls’ basketball team won what many have labeled the Greatest Girls High School Basketball Contest Ever Played.

The Cobras defeated Everly, 113-107 in overtime during the IGHSAU’s state championship contest at old Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines.

The contest showcased two of the best ever to play the six-on-six game – Denise (Long) Rite for Union-Whitten and Everly’s Jeanette Olson.
