Tigers shine at Grundy

GRUNDY CENTER- A school record run by senior Kolby Winter headlined a stellar showing by the state-ranked South Hardin boys’ cross country team at the Spartan Invitational here Thursday.

Winter edged Lake LeBahn of Union High in a photo-finish for the gold medal. Both Winter, listed No. 8 in the Class 2A individual rankings, and LeBahn, rated No. 5, were clocked in 16:10 with the nod to Winter at the finish line.

“It was a classic race. Kolby ran on his shoulder the entire race and just barely won the kick on the homestretch. It was an excellent job by Kolby and a huge confidence booster,” stated South Hardin coach Mike Olson. The school record was 16:27 held by Tim Rose.

The first placing was Winter’s third in five meets as was the team title for the third-ranked in 2A Tigers.

South Hardin registered five runners in the top 20, actually the first 16 of the 91-runner field, for a team total of 42. Denver was the runner-up at 65 and host Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck scored 105 for third. Denver is ranked No. 8 in Class 1A and GC/G-R ninth in 2A.
