Storm's Kolthoff state medal winner

 

DES MOINES- A highly-successful three-day run at the Iowa High School State Wrestling Championships finished with a fifth place finish for Carter Kolthoff of South Hardin-BCLUW inside the Wells Fargo Arena here Saturday.

Kolthoff registered a 4-2 record to posted the top eight podium placing at 106-pounds in Class 2A.

The medal was just the third in the 10-years of sharing between South Hardin and BCLUW. Tyler Lutes was a state runner-up in 2014 and Carter’s older brother Taylor Kolthoff scored seventh two years ago.

Kolthoff, seventh-ranked, capped the state showing with a fall in 5:02 for fifth over eighth-ranked Lane Scorpil (35-5) of Columbus Community. Kolthoff dominated the placing match, building a 14-1 lead before the pin.

“He was reaching so I just popped the arms and went straight double and then worked some back points, and I saw that half and just ran it,” said Kolthoff on the Scorpil match.

He added, “It is a pretty big accomplishment from not being here last year. I worked hard in the off season, gonna work hard from now on to get better and try to be here next year.”

Kolthoff open state with a narrow 6-5 victory Thursday over Waukon’s Jakob Regan (32-13). He was up 4-0 after a reversal to start the third period, but found himself down 5-4 when Regan had a five-point run with a reversal and three nearfall points. Kolthoff answered with another reversal for the win.
