EMS hire is confirmed

ELDORA – The Eldora city council turned aside Mayor Dave Dunn’s call that they rethink their decision to hire a Gladbrook man as the next EMS ambulance service director.

Dunn cited a rash of  resignations from the service in recent weeks and said the city needed to slow down and make a temporary director appointment while it unearthed what lay behind all the disaffection on the service.

He questioned the new director’s ability to recruit and rebuild the staff. Dunn expressed an urgency about trying to reverse some of the recent resignations.

But, the council, in no uncertain terms, unanimously re-affirmed its move of a few days ago and once again approved Ryan Sutcliffe as the new head of the service.

Several council members rose to the defense of Sutcliffe, saying he’d been the victim of mis-and-disinformation, and that their follow-ups on his credentials and references had  yielded a host of positives.

Sutcliffe is now clear to begin work  Monday. He was hired on a full time basis and will be a member of the response teams as well as head up the service. He comes on board even as the city has been  interviewing to replace a sizeable portion of the service which was reported to have resigned in recent weeks.

Sutcliffe replaces a temporary director who had stepped into the post after long time (part time) ambulance service director Corey Larson resigned earlier this year. Julie Towne who manages Greenbelt Home Care, and who for the last few months has taken on some extra duty as part time director for the Eldora EMS ambulance service, says that the public shouldn’t be concerned about the staffing levels.

Come the 25th, the staff should be back up to something you could easily describe as full.

She says that’s because once the city started a search for replacements it’s found a wealth of applicants

Right now as of Wednesday, staff was up to 6 full timers, and expectations were to have 8 by the start of next week when the new director also comes on.

As of mid this week there were 14 staff, and it was expected to be a full complement in a matter of days.

She said the community can rest assured these people are not newbie’s…but fully trained and credentialed.
