The devastating reality of fire departments

AREA – Volunteer fire services in Iowa, specifically in rural towns, are struggling.

Many volunteers are simply aging out with lack of volunteers to replace them.

The lack of volunteers is a reflection of a nationwide trend, which placed the number of firefighters at a record low in 2011. While the national numbers are slowly climbing back up, they aren’t enough to supplement community needs, especially in small towns like Eldora.
