Cougars' Lashbrook sixth at state

DES MOINES- AGWSR’s Trey Lashbrook added to his state medal collection with a third top eight placing at the Iowa State High School Wrestling Championships inside Wells Fargo Arena here Saturday.

Lashbrook posted back-to-back wins to start strong and then settled for sixth at 120-pounds in Class 1A.

The sixth comes after a third placing last season also at 120 and eighth at 113 two years ago.

“I’ll take sixth, It’s not what I want, but it gives me a reason to work and motivation for next year for sure,” stated Lashbrook.

The eighth-ranked Lashbrook reached the state semi-finals for a second straight year, but then lost the next three to finish 2-3.

The AGWSR junior escaped with a 5-4 win in the Thursday’s first-round, scoring a reversal with three-seconds remaining to beat Cade Cook (35-13) of North Linn. In the quarterfinals Friday, Lashbrook was a 7-3 winner over 10th-ranked Bryce Shaha (26-5) of Mount Ayr. He scored a pair of takedowns in the first period and secured the victory with a late escape and third takedown.
