Barkema first-team all-state BB, Stubbe third

ELDORA- Seniors Brad Barkema of BCLUW and AGWSR’s Liam Stubbe were selected all-staters with the release of the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association baseball teams Tuesday.

Barkema was named to the Class 2A first-team at utility and Stubbe was tabbed to the Class 1A third team as a pitcher.

Barkema, the Comets’ catcher for four summers, capped a banner career with a strong senior campaign. Barkema batted .412 with 35 base hits, including 11 doubles, to go with 29 runs scored and 20 runs batted in. He also had 21 free passes – nine walks and a dozen hit-by-a-pitch. He had a .565 slugging percent and .514 on-base percent.

Stubbe posted a 6-1 mark on the pitcher’s mound and had a 2.47 earned run average with 64 strikeouts over 45 1/3 innings. At shortstop when not throwing, Stubbe hit .417 with 25 safeties to go with 17 runs scored and 14 runs batted in. He had a .633 slugging percent with five doubles, one triple and two home runs, and a .521 on-base percent.
